Instrumentation

Whether it be long- or mid-term embankment or bridge condition monitoring to tunnel deformation assessment during repair or replacement, our systems are designed for challenging, wire and power free deployment. The award winning Senceive solutions use a wireless mesh-networked, intelligent sensor system consisting of a collection of small easy to deploy devices, equipped with sensing, communication and computation capabilities. They work co-operatively and intelligently (“they talk to each other”) to enable monitoring of complex layouts or challenging difficult to access environments.

Monitoring, acquiring data and then creating knowledge is at the heart of better decision making and management of assets. Knowing and predicting the state of assets facilitates efficient, economic and safe operations – monitoring degradation, scheduling remedial action or reacting quickly to accidents. We build and deploy robust long life systems to aid this process by monitoring with minimum human intervention and are easy re-deployable.

Mesh networking

At a technical level the system has been tested and proven over 8 years of deployments in highly demanding environments and prior to that, 5 years of research at UCL one of the pre-eminent engineering universities in the world. Our System Integration Layer consists of a lightweight operating system and modules that interface between the sensors, communications layers and processing systems on each node and then back through a gateway to our server and web interface. The nodes themselves are micro-controller based; mesh-networked with IEEE 802.15.4 and form an integrated system that can monitor over a wide area, or any convoluted physical/geographical environment. Proprietary algorithms support functions such as clustering, data retrieval and policy distribution, self diagnosis, position estimation, dynamic algorithm management and security models. The gateway only needs to communicate with one node in order for the whole network to send data. This provides for highly flexible deployment permutations in comparison to hub and spoke wireless alternatives. Our gateway comes in a variety of options to ensure data is readily available even before the install team leaves site. The options vary from USB connection to a laptop, connectivity via a solar powered GPRS modem or to a wide choice of networking where some power is available and connections to other data bases, data loggers or industrial PCs are appropriate.

The system is highly intelligent and enables us to interact with nodes and the gateway remotely and can visualise and manage key elements within the network. For example: Battery life is important and we are able to see and predict battery life on a continuous basis. Furthermore as a result of many years of development on our sensor interface and wireless algorithms, our products’ battery life is very extensive and should last between 3-5+ years in typical situations. While our proprietary technology is exciting and we are innovating continuously, we only bring the most robust and applicable products and techniques to market.

Product Range

Senceive’s family of mesh-networked sensor units equips companies with the capability of efficiently monitoring their infrastructure.

The FlatMesh Node gives the Rail and Construction industry a reliable, easy to deploy and cost effective monitoring solution. It needs little installation labour or technical know-how and requires little ongoing support. Extra units may be added at any time when additional or unforeseen monitoring requirements are presented. Our nodes are readily able to interface to both analogue and digital sensor types providing a voltage output or can be used for reporting. All nodes connect up to our gateway which only connectivity to one other node to ensure all the systems data is transmitted to our user friendly Webmonitor. All FlatMesh Nodes measure temperature and at present we are also able to readily deploy the following sensor types:

Geotechnical Sensors

Tilt Sensor

Crack Sensor

Draw Wire

Our Tilt sensors are High Precision units that can measure tilt and thereby displacement in 2 axes very precisely. The sensor can be mounted internally or externally.

FlatMesh Data Sheet

The Crack sensor has an external Sensor, which can be mounted across a crack and measures any change in the width.

FlatMesh Data Sheet

A similar principal to the Crack sensor, the Draw Wire allows for measurements of a much larger span to be made.

Other Sensor Types

Light Sensor

Pollution Sensor

Humidity Sensor

The Light Sensor measures light levels, and can be used for example in display cases of light sensitive artefacts or similar as used in Charlecote Park This Sensor detects the levels of Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC) and Formaldehyde in the air, as used by the British Museum The Humidity Sensor detects humidity levels, as used by the Tower of London

Our IntelliMesh Node offers industry an “intelligent infrastructure” where the system detects local or distributed problems with an industrial asset and reports as necessary.

Gateway Options

Our gateway unit, the FlatMesh Gateway Node, gives industry the ability to remotely monitor their infrastructure by extracting data from an installed mesh sensor network. Data may be manually extracted or regular updates may be configured. Our gateways can be mains powered, connected to PCs via USB, or solar panel powered units that communicate to a remote server via GPRS.
