Asset Survey Solutions implements Senceive wireless monitoring as part of Level Crossing Removal Project in Victoria, Australia

Asset Survey Solutions, a multi-discipline survey company, implemented the Senceive FlatMesh wireless sensor network from Position Partners into its current project.

Monitoring rail corridors using traditional survey methods is a notoriously troublesome task, so when Darren Dean, Survey Manager and Director of Asset Survey Solutions was starting work on a level crossing removal project in Victoria, he opted for a solution built on the Senceive FlatMesh Network. The system was supplied and supported by Position Partners and provided a means to increase the safety of his team, improve productivity and be more cost-effective for his clients.

Prior to implementing the Senceive FlatMesh wireless sensor network, Asset Survey Solutions would have needed multiple surveyors on site taking manual recordings. To meet the recording requirements of this project surveyors would have been taking a reading every hour, every day for three months.

“From our side of things, it allowed resources to be used elsewhere as crews were not needed on site, and from a client’s perspective it increased safety and proved more cost-effective as they’re not paying for multiple site crews taking hourly reading because an automated survey network is doing it for them,” said Mr Dean.

“Once the Senceive system is installed it’s monitoring 24 hours a day and you don’t have to have a surveyor on site.”

Senceive FlatMesh wireless sensor network saves time, resources and increases safety

A key benefit for Asset Survey Solutions was that once the Senceive FlatMesh wireless sensor network was installed during an occupation when the trains are stopped there was no need for the surveyor to go back into the rail corridor unless there was damage to a node or another part of the system.

“Once it’s installed and running, it’s pretty simple to use. The proof is in the pudding, the Senceive FlatMesh Network works; it’s a reliable system and the ease of application is unmatched, I’ve had surveyors using it that have never used a monitoring system before and they found it quick and easy to use,” said Mr Dean.

“From a company’s perspective using the Senceive Network saves you time, resources and reduces risk to the surveying team. From a surveying company’s perspective, it’s a no-brainer. The advantages of the Senceive FlatMesh Network far outweighs any downsides!”

Simple reporting provides easy-to-understand information

Mr Dean also found the reporting options to be sufficiently agile to provide data in the format required for each individual project, with in-depth reports available for rail survey experts, and simple overview reports for non-specialists.

“It’s a really simple system and clients loved that they could choose from an overview based on daily updates - right through to detailed minute-by-minute reports. We showed a Google map indicating node locations and used a traffic light system to show changing conditions; if a location was displayed orange we knew it had an issue, and if it was red we knew we had a problem. That simple, visualisation made it easy for people to digest,” said Mr Dean.

“If the track level dropped after works and had an above-tolerance error, for example, someone without rail or survey knowledge might not understand that’s actually quite a big problem, with potential outcomes ranging from train delays to much worse circumstances. So, it just really simplified it for people and I know that the engineers really appreciated that they didn’t have to sit down and learn the background knowledge of the whole system.”

Using the Senceive FlatMesh wireless sensor network provided three key advantages: the data proved to be highly accurate, it generated far more samples than a traditional method, and it delivered results almost instantly.
