Tilt Sensors

Make an enquiry

Senceive wireless triaxial tilt sensor nodes are at the heart of most of the monitoring systems installed around the world by our partners and clients.

Reflecting a decade of continuous improvement, each of the many thousands of tilt sensor nodes in use every day contains Senceive DNA. They are easy to use, precise and robust. Our wireless tilt meters can be installed in minutes on virtually any surface, at any orientation. Every sensor offers:

  • Simple installation: They can be fit to virtually any surface, at any orientation, in a matter of minutes.
  • Ultra-low power consumption: Minimal levels of power consumption mean they can be left in place for up to 15 years of maintenance free monitoring.
  • Resilience & precision: Built to withstand harsh environments, you’ll receive a consistent stream of accurate data.
  • Flexible data access: You can review insights and interact with your data online using Senceive WebMonitor™ or your own data viewing platform.

How do triaxial tilt sensors work?

Triaxial tilt sensors measure minute changes in in angle or inclination. The three-axis measurement is based on how the sensor is positioned with respect to gravity.  Two axes are usable for measurements at any given time.  The movement data that is reported is based on the two axes of rotation from the horizontal plane. When transmitted wirelessly, these measurements deliver continuous, reliable insights that help teams identify and respond to potential issues early.

Expertise that makes a difference

Technology alone isn’t enough. What sets Senceive apart is the combination of our cutting-edge wireless tilt sensors with industry expertise. Working closely with partners and clients around the globe, Senceive helps organisations move beyond reactive monitoring to proactive asset management.

FAQs

What is a Senceive tilt sensor?

Senceive tilt sensors are highly precise triaxial wireless sensor nodes, designed to measure tilt (inclination) around three axes. They are typically used as part of a smart IoT remote monitoring solution, with applications in the construction, infrastructure, civil engineering and mining sectors. Senceive tilt sensors relay condition data through a wireless communication platform to a cellular gateway that transmits the data to a cloud-based portal for client access.

How does a tilt sensor measure movement?

The three-axis measurement is based on how the MEMS tilt sensor is positioned with respect to gravity. Two axes are usable for measurements at any given time.  The movement data that is reported is based on the two axes of rotation from the horizontal plane.

How do Senceive’s tilt sensors differ from basic or consumer-grade tilt sensors?

Senceive’s tilt sensors are engineered for long-term, high-precision monitoring. They use precision MEMS or integrated triaxial sensing to reliably measure extremely small changes, even in harsh environments. Unlike consumer-grade devices, Senceive tilt sensors are designed for engineering-grade precision, repeatability, stability, and durability, refined over more than two decades of continuous development in real-world geotechnical and structural monitoring applications.

How do the tilt sensors deliver geotechnical and structural data?

When used as part of a wireless IoT monitoring solution, tilt sensors such as the Senceive range of IX and Nano tilt nodes deliver continuous, reliable data relating to structural and geotechnical movement. This helps engineers, surveyors and infrastructure owners identify and respond to potential defects, distress and structural failure promptly.

The tilt sensors communicate via our FlatMesh or GeoWAN networks and have the capability to send updates at sub-minute frequency to provide continuous and reliable monitoring.

How does the precision of tilt sensors compare with geodetic survey?

It is generally possible to achieve a higher level of absolute precision using geodetic survey measurement techniques such a total station and reflective prism targets. Tilt sensors can however provide measurement of relative movement sub-millimetre accuracy and do so with the advantages of:

  • more frequent sampling
  • lower cost
  • reduced manpower on site
  • No need for line of sight.

Tilt Sensor Specifications

Parameter Value
Resolution 0.0001° (0.00175 mm/m)
Repeatability ±0.0005° (±0.0087 mm/m)
Range ±90°

In many applications the detection of relative rather than absolute movement is more useful, for example when monitoring slope stability.

The precision of tilt meter readings measuring soil movement on slopes was compared with measurements from robotic total stations at a site in Austria in 2024. Tilt sensors and prisms were mounted on the same metal stakes inserted into the ground. Comparison of data presented as longitudinal displacement in the x-axis showed a high degree of correlation, indicating that tilt meters provide a comparable degree of precision in this application.

What environments are these tilt sensors suitable for?

Senceive tilt sensors are rugged and built for use in challenging conditions. They are waterproof (IP66 / IP67 / IP68) and can be used in tunnels, on buildings, bridgesdams, rail track and structures, embankments, and anywhere where precision tilt/movement monitoring is needed.

What are the main applications of Senceive tilt sensors?

Common uses include:

Are tilt sensors suitable for long-term condition monitoring?

Yes, wireless tilt sensors are built for multi-year deployments, with long battery life, stable performance and robust environmental protection. They are ideal for continuous, long-term structural health and geotechnical monitoring and can last up to 15 years depending on reporting rates.

How often should tilt sensors record data?

Reporting rates are fully configurable. Depending on project needs, sensors can sample at very high frequency (sub-minute) intervals where rapid structural movement is expected, or just a few times per day if sudden movement is unlikely. Higher frequency sampling is useful for construction applications; lower rates maximise battery life for long-term monitoring.

Can I incorporate tilt sensors into existing monitoring systems?

Yes, our tilt nodes can be integrated into existing Senceive wireless monitoring systems. They can also work alongside other sensor types in a monitoring network, giving a unified view of structural and geotechnical behaviour. Senceive networks allow multiple sensor types to transmit through a single gateway and be visualised together in the WebMonitor online data portal.
